The hotel, built in 1867, was named after the daughter of Weimar's grand duke Carl-Friedrich and Maria Pawlowna, who, in 1871, was crowned Empress of Germany as the wife of William of Prussia. In choosing this name, the proprietor at the time wished to show his reverence for her social and cultural contributions to the city of Weimar.
